Child Development

5 Activities to Improve your Child’s Gross Motor Skills.

In my previous post, I had talked about activities a child can do to improve his/her finer muscles also known as their fine motor skills, and how important it is for their development, in continuation to my previous post I will be talking about the development of Gross Motor Skills.

Play is an important aspect of growing up, this involves interaction with peers, physical activity and energy. Play activities can be indoor or outdoor. Here, we are going to talk more about outdoor activities. As indoor play consist mainly to develop a child’s finer muscles, outdoor play is significant to enhance a child’s muscles involved in physical activity.

What is Gross Motor Skill Development?

This means the development of larger muscles such as the limbs, legs, arms, etc. It can be also termed as eye and foot coordination. The skills involve control and coordination of muscles involved in physical coordination. E.g. running, jumping, crawling and skipping.

5 Activities to Enhance their Gross Motor Skills

Sports: Be it any sport the child likes, encourage and let them get involved in it. Playing any sport is helpful in developing larger muscles. It can simply be throwing the ball and telling your child to catch or kicking the ball.

Dancing: Kids love to groove to the music, and there is nothing like it when you play some music and see them dance. It’s fun!

Outdoor Play: Taking your child to the playground or a garden nearby, is one of the best ways, to involve the child with the environment and let them jump around, run make some friends, play outdoor games which will help develop interest and energy plus enhance their development.

Swimming: You can also start by teaching your child to swim as this involves training the arms and legs, if not enroll them for swimming lessons. Swimming can be introduced to a child as early as one year, but that has to be done only by an authorized professional trainer.

Taking the stairs: There are few parents who let their child practice going up and down the stairs, especially when they learn to walk. Of course, they do not climb the entire flight of stairs but just two or three steps. With their guidance by holding the child’s hand or just carefully monitoring the child as he/ she tries to balance as they practice, this activity is also one of the best ways to improve a child’s gross motor development as it involves maintaining balance of the arms and legs to complete the task.

The above mentioned activities are some of the basic activities that can be introduced to children for enhancing their Gross Motor Development. I would always advice parents to be more creative in presenting activities to your kids when it comes to outdoor play.

Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child’s soul.
